Here is the short of it. Poland's screen culture is a rich resource for creative direction. The National Film School in Łódź, founded in 1948, trained Roman Polański, Andrzej Wajda, Krzysztof Kieślowski and the cinematographer Janusz Kamiński, and that lineage shaped a distinctive visual sensibility. Pawlikowski's 'Ida' and 'Cold War' — the latter earning three Oscar nominations in 2019 — showed how restrained, precisely composed black-and-white visuals could reach a global audience, while Kieślowski's 'Three Colours' trilogy is a touchstone for colour and tone.
